Have safe emergency heating equipment in your home, as well as a flashlight, bottled water, and three days worth of food in case the power goes out.
To prevent frozen pipes, let your hot and cold faucets drip overnight and open cabinet doors to allow heat to reach pipes.
Find the water shut-off valve in your home in advance, so you know where to go if a pipe bursts.
Make sure water for exterior faucets is off.
If you will be away, make sure to maintain indoor temps at 55+ degrees.
Keep space heater 3+ feet away from furniture
Keep your freezer’s ice maker on to keep water moving through system.
Make sure air vents and radiators are not blocked or obstructed.
Limit opening exterior doors.
Add your utility company number to your phone contacts, in case you need to reach out in an emergency.
Car Tips
Never attempt to charge or jump-start a battery that is frozen, as it may rupture or explode.
Only warm up your car in an open area.
Make certain your tires are properly inflated.
Keep your gas tank at least half full to avoid gas line freeze-up.
If possible, avoid using your parking brake in cold.
Replace your windshield wiper blades.
Keep your washer fluid full with winter formula fluid to avoid freezing.
